Potential energy is the stored energy an object possesses due to its position, condition, or state. It can be converted into other forms of energy and is an essential concept in understanding the behavior of systems. There are different types of potential energy: gravitational, elastic, and chemical.

  • Gravitational Potential Energy: This type of potential energy is associated with an object's elevated position relative to a reference point. For example, a book placed on a shelf has gravitational potential energy due to its distance above the ground.

  • Elastic Potential Energy: Elastic potential energy is stored in objects that can be stretched or compressed, such as a spring or a rubber band. When these objects are deformed from their equilibrium position, they possess potential energy that is released when they return to their original state.

  • Chemical Potential Energy: Chemical potential energy is associated with the energy stored in atoms and molecules. It is released or absorbed during chemical reactions. For instance, the potential energy stored in food is converted into kinetic energy when our bodies digest and use it for energy.
