The Western Front was a major theater of conflict during World War I, characterized by the extensive system of trenches that stretched from the North Sea to the Swiss border. This grueling form of warfare dominated the Western Front for much of the war, with soldiers from both sides entrenched in muddy, rat-infested trenches.

One of the most significant battles on the Western Front was the Battle of the Somme. Launched by the British and French forces in 1916, this offensive aimed to break through German lines and alleviate pressure on the French at Verdun. However, the battle resulted in tremendous casualties on both sides, with little territorial gain. The Battle of Verdun, which began in February 1916, was another major clash along the Western Front. It was one of the longest and bloodiest battles, lasting for almost ten months and resulting in hundreds of thousands of casualties.
