Learning Chinese Language: Post 3 - Larger Numbers and Units

In Chinese, numbers are formed by combining the basic digits with units such as 十 (shí), 百 (bǎi), and 千 (qiān). For instance, the number 11 is expressed as 十一 (shí yī), 104 as 一百零四 (yī bǎi líng sì), and 356 as 三百五十六 (sān bǎi wǔ shí liù). Moreover, larger numbers are constructed by combining units with the digits, making it essential to understand the structure and pronunciation of these units.

To further illustrate, consider the numbers 50, 200, and 8000. In Chinese, these are 五十 (wǔ shí), 二百 (èr bǎi), and 八千 (bā qiān) respectively. Additionally, the combination of units and digits can produce even larger numbers like 五百 (wǔ bǎi) for 500 or 八千一百 (bā qiān yī bǎi) for 8100.

Understanding the use and pronunciation of units is essential for grasping larger numbers in Chinese. By mastering the structure and pronunciation of these units, learners can effectively express and comprehend larger quantities in the language.
