The period of the Salem Witch Trials saw a flurry of accusations and trials that gripped the community with fear and suspicion. Accusations of witchcraft were made against both women and men, predominantly targeting those who were seen as outcasts or who held unconventional beliefs. The process of accusing and trying suspected witches was filled with deeply flawed methods and unfounded beliefs.

Accusations often began with young girls, who claimed to be afflicted by the witchcraft of certain individuals. These girls would exhibit strange behaviors, including fits, seizures, and visions, which were believed to be the work of witches. As a result, many innocent people were accused based solely on the words of these girls, without any substantial evidence to support the claims.

One of the most notorious aspects of the Salem Witch Trials was the acceptance of spectral evidence. Spectral evidence referred to the testimonies of witnesses who claimed to have seen the apparitions or spirits of the accused involved in acts of witchcraft. Instead of relying on tangible evidence or reliable eyewitness accounts, the court allowed spectral evidence to be presented, further fueling the hysteria and leading to the unjust conviction of numerous innocent individuals.

The trials themselves were deeply flawed, with a presumption of guilt rather than innocence. The accused were subjected to harsh interrogation tactics, including physical abuse and sleep deprivation, in order to extract confessions. Those who refused to confess were often viewed as even more suspicious and were more likely to be found guilty and sentenced to death.

The Salem Witch Trials lasted from 1692 to 1693, resulting in the execution of twenty people, nineteen of whom were hanged, and one who was pressed to death under heavy stones. While the panic eventually subsided, it left a lasting scar on the community and serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers of mass hysteria and the importance of a fair justice system.
