Einstein's theory of general relativity predicted the existence of gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by the acceleration of massive objects. These waves carry energy and information, and their detection has opened up new avenues for our understanding of the universe. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) made headlines in 2015 when it successfully detected gravitational waves for the first time, confirming Einstein's predictions and ushering in a new era of gravitational wave astronomy.
