Diffraction refers to the bending or spreading of light waves as they encounter an obstacle or pass through an opening. This phenomenon can be observed when light passes through a narrow slit or around objects with sharp edges. The amount of diffraction experienced depends on the wavelength of light and the size of the opening or obstacle. Diffraction patterns can be observed as alternating bright and dark regions due to constructive and destructive interference of the diffracted waves.
